The Sartell High School Girls’ Basketball team will be hosting their annual Sabres Helping Sabres Cancer game this Friday, February 15th at 7:15 pm when they take on the Zimmerman Thunder.
This year the team is supporting Lucy Ann Koehn, daughter of Nikki and Tim Koehn, and sister of Hayden Koehn. Lucy Ann is a third grader from Oak Ridge Elementary and her family belongs to Celebration Lutheran Church. On the morning of October 15 Lucy’s mom found a lump on Lucy Ann’s back that had not been there the night before. An MRI the next morning at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis confirmed it was a tumor. Soon she had her first of what would be four surgeries. Doctors believed there was a 95% probability that the tumor was benign. However, this was not to be the case. Lucy Ann was diagnosed with malignant myoepithelioma soft tissue high-grade sarcoma. There are fewer than 100 cases worldwide, with less than 20% of them in children. This week she will begin her fourth and final round of chemo, which will then be followed by a five-week stay at Rochester Mayo for radiation.
Lucy Ann is a girl with a big heart who also loves horses and drawing. Prior to her diagnosis she had been growing her beautiful brown hair to donate to wigs for kids. Even after she was diagnosed, this was something she still wanted to do so that she could help out another child.
Lucy Ann is incredibly brave and positive as she faces this battle head on. PLEASE join the Sabres Girls’ Basketball Team THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2019 as they work to support Lucy Ann and her family. There will be many activities that night as well as opportunities to honor loved ones who have also battled cancer. The C squad game will be played at 5:45 at Sartell Middle School. The JV will play at 5:45 at Sartell High School, and the varsity will follow at 7:15.
