The Sabres hosted the Eagles from Apollo Thursday night. It was a back and forth battle the entire game. Apollo hit on 4 three pointers in the first half, and Sartell did a nice job of attacking the rim, having some nice strong finishes and getting to and converting at the free throw line. Sartell owned a narrow two point lead at half time. In the second half, there were several lead changes (Apollo built a nice lead, which Sartell clawed into). And Sartell was able to get out to an 8 point lead eventually. With that 8 point lead and just a few minutes on the clock, Sartell got a steal and a fastbreak opportunity. The layup was missed, and Apollo was able to take advantage by knocking down a couple of three pointers. Sartell was able to hit enough shots and clutch free throws to force Apollo to apply tough pressure. With only a few seconds left in the game and a 3 point lead, Sartell got fouled on the inbounds and sent to the free throw line. The Sabres knocked down 1 out of 2 free throws to get the important 4 point lead. Sartell made sure to not foul, and allowed Apollo to shoot an uncontested three at the buzzer (that went in) and allow the clock to run out with the victory intact. It was another very nice balanced and team effort (both on the court and the energy and encouragement from the bench) against a very formidable opponent in a talented Apollo JV squad. Sartell had their best game from a points scoring perspective. A big part of that is going 22/33 from the free throw line and an aggressive offensive mindset. The Sabres. will look to continue the momentum Tuesday night at Willmar.
