It was a back and forth battle the entire way after the Sartell JV Boys made the long trip to Bemidji to take on a very aggressive, quick, and talented squad. Bemidji got out to an early 7-2 lead. Sartell battled back right away, and it was tight the rest of the first half, stalling at a 30-30 halftime tie. In the second half, Sartell made good decisions, locked down on defense, and eventually built a nice 50-38 lead over halfway through the second half. Bemidji ramped up their pressure even more and Sartell wasn’t able to handle it well enough by making some turnovers, missing some shots at the rim, and missing some free throws down the stretch. Bemidji had the ball with seconds left and a tie game, executed a play well, but missed a layup. Sartell rebounded it, pushed it up the floor and threw up a long shot for the game winner. The shot did not fall, resulting in overtime. In overtime, Bemidji struck first by putting in two points. Sartell eventually answered. Bemidji scored one more bucket to go up 61-59. Sartell had the ball in the closing seconds, the crowd did an early countdown (earlier than the game clock), forcing Sartell to shoot a tough floater that didn’t fall. It is a great learning experience for Sartell, and will eventually help make the team stronger in the end. Hats off to Bemidji to keep on battling and making several very tough plays defensively and offensively down the stretch to steal the win. Bemidji was a great challenge for Sartell. The Sabres played well for the vast majority of the game. Sartell falls to 17-2, and looks to take on another tough opponent in Moorehead on Tuesday night.
