Apollo got out to a hot start gaining an early 7-0 lead. From there on, it was a high octane offensive show. Some hot shooting from the outside got Sartell back in the game. And, in the closing minutes of the first half, Sartell was able to string together a couple of makes and turnovers to take a one-point lead right before halftime. In the second half, it was very tight the entire game. Apollo ramped up their pressure, and Sartell handled it well. Down the stretch, Sartell took care of the ball, and had several very strong finishes at the rim to seal the victory.
The Sabres got out to a slower start to the season, starting 2-4. Since then, Sartell has really turned it around. These young men showed up to practice everyday, ready to work their tails off, and had a very competitive environment with teammates to keep pushing each other toward individual and team growth. Sartell finished the season, winning 10 of their last 11 games (the one loss was a very good game against a really talented and tough Alexandria team). I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team improve this much over the course of a season. What makes it more impressive, is that they did it with a shortened season. This not only shows improvement as basketball players, but reveals character already there, and built throughout the season. This is a very special group of young men, and I’m very confident that they will grow up to be very fine gentlemen. Well done players and parents! I’m so very proud of all of you, and honored that you allowed me to be a part of the family!
