The Sartell Sabres JV Boys came out with a ton of great energy from the tip. They were able to handle very tough pressure and convert tough baskets to get out to a 20-10 lead. Alexandria clamped down tighter on defense, and chipped away to get back into the game. Sartell held onto a narrow two point victory at halftime (23-21). In the second half, Alex connected on a couple of huge shots and forced a couple of turnovers to take the lead. Sartell kept battling, and stayed in the game by playing our best defense of the year against our toughest opponent of the year. The Sabres applied a ton of pressure down the stretch and were able to get some turnovers and stay in the game. Ultimately the clock ran out before Sartell was able to regain the lead. We know it was a loss, but it was a huge improvement since the first match against Alex. Alex beat us by 25 the first time around scoring 67 points. Sartell really clamped down on defense and was able to decrease the amount of point given up to Alex by 20 points. We had a great chance to win, and that is a testament to the hard work and team defense these young men played. A ref told us after the game (in reference to Sartell), “That was the best team defense I’ve seen.” From a basketball standpoint, that is one of the biggest compliments a team could ever receive. And this is coming from a ref who refs a lot of Alexandria’s games (who, in my opinion have the best defense out of any opponent we face). These boys keep showing improvement every week, and I’m excited to finish this week out playing our best basketball. The Sabres take on Rocori away Monday night.
