The Sartell girls soccer team went on the road Thursday night to take on the Willmar Cardinals. The Sabres came out strong and controlled the match in the first 20 minutes but the Cardinal proved to be a scrappy team that battled hard for 80 minutes. The Sabres struck first when senior Christa Meyer slotted a brilliant ball through the Cardinal back line to an oncoming Chloe Turner. Turner’s shot was tipped by the goalkeeper but had the power to prevent a clean catch and carry into the net. The sophomore’s first half goal would prove to be the game winner. In the second half Madi Kruse double the Sartell lead with a great hit to the far post from the left side of the field. The Cardinal responded with intense pressure in the final 20 minutes, helped by a pair of controversial rulings from the official who twice chose to award Willmar a penalty kick, both in the final 15 minutes. Sabres keeper Chloe Swanson came up with 11 saves on the night and Willmar failed to convert on either of the their penalty opportunities. Swanson picks up the shutout. The Sabres turn their attention to Tuesday’s regular season home finale against Bemidji at 5:00pm.
