The Sartell girls varsity soccer dropped their CLC home opener 2-1 against Alexandria Thursday night. The first half was a back and forth battle between the Sabres and Cardinals, each having several good scoring chances turned away by solid goalkeeping and good defense. With just 1 second to play in the first half Alexandria broke through with a goal making the first half score 1-0 in favor of the Cardinals. Alexandria doubled their lead in the 55th minute with a brilliant strike from the right side that found the upper left corner of the goal. Sartell answered in the 65th minute when Madden Quinn won the ball near midfield, playing Kendal Coffin into space along the right side. Kendal’s cross into the box found the foot of Bella Zerafa who buried her first goal of the season in the side netting far post. The Sabres dominated possession and had the better of the play throughout the second half but just could not find the equalizer. Goalkeeper Chloe Swanson made 8 saves and turned in an outstanding performance in her first start for the Sabres. Sartell will go on the road for the first time Tuesday night, taking on Brainerd at 7:00pm.
